Babak Bayat — Biography

Babak Bayat (1946–2006) was an Iranian composer whose career encompassed film scores, popular songs and recorded poetry. His early musical development included evening studies at Tehran’s music conservatory, instruction associated with Evelyn and Samin Baghcheban, and experience in choral and operatic performance. A lasting collaboration with lyricist Iraj Jannati Ataei and singer Dariush became an important strand of his songwriting career. He also composed for Ebi, Moein and Googoosh. Alongside scores for dozens of films, Bayat contributed music to recordings of Ahmad Shamlou’s poetry. Teaching remained another part of his professional life: he taught film composition and helped train singers including Mohammad Esfahani, Hami and Mani Rahnama.
