Hatef — Biography

Hatef is an Iranian singer, composer and lyricist born Ali Hatefi in Tehran in 1961–62. His early experience came through live performances at arts camps in Ramsar, where an introduction to Ali Derakhshan and Masoud Houshmand led him into professional recording. After moving to the United States, he became active in Los Angeles’s Iranian music community in 1984. His repertoire later expanded to upbeat pop, including Zange Tafrih; he has said he did not want to confine himself to a single style. Lyrics are central to his writing process, with melodies often developing alongside the words. His experience making music videos also led to the feature film Mosaafer, which screened at Britain’s Portobello independent film festival.
