Legendary Persian Singers
Updated daily · June 29, 2026
Over the past century, Iranian music has produced some of the world's most legendary voices — from the masters of classical (sonnati) singing to the divas and stars of the golden age of Persian pop, and the diaspora artists who carried Persian music across the globe. This is a guide to the most celebrated Iranian and Persian singers of all time — not a definitive ranking, but the names most widely regarded as legends.
The masters of classical Persian music (âvâz)
The foundation of Persian vocal art was laid by the masters of classical music. Mohammad-Reza Shajarian is the most widely regarded as the supreme master of Persian classical (âvâz) singing; his "Rabbana" remains iconic. Alongside him stand towering figures such as Gholam-Hossein Banan and Shahram Nazeri, and the pioneering female voices Qamar-ol-Moluk Vaziri (the first woman to perform publicly), Marzieh and Delkash. Homayoun Shajarian carries the tradition forward today.
The golden age of Persian pop (1950s–70s)
Modern Persian pop was born in the mid-20th century. Vigen, widely called the "Sultan of Persian Pop," is credited as its pioneer. The era's defining voices include Googoosh — the most iconic Iranian pop diva — alongside Dariush, Ebi, Hayedeh, Mahasti, Sattar and Aref, whose songs have stayed beloved across generations.
The diaspora era (after 1979)
After 1979, many of Iran's biggest singers continued their careers abroad, with Los Angeles ("Tehrangeles") becoming the heart of Persian pop in exile. Ebi, Dariush, Moein, Andy, Leila Forouhar and Shohreh kept the music alive for a global Iranian audience; Googoosh, after years of silence, resumed performing internationally from 2000.
